How to recognize pain caused by Hoffa’s fat pad?
If your patient experiences anterior knee pain during rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction, but you excluded patellofemoral pain (PFP) as a cause, a differential diagnosis is pain caused by Hoffa’s fat pad. The incidence appears to be around 5-10% of patients after meniscus or knee ligament surgery. But what is the exact function of Hoffa’s fad pad and why might it be associated with pain after ACL reconstruction? And how could you recognize this as a cause of pain?
