Is it time to develop specific return to running criteria for ACL rehabilitation? An international survey of physiotherapists criteria for return to running following ACL injury.
Return to running too quickly after anterior cruciate ligament surgery can negatively affect long term knee health.
Since it’s unclear which criteria should be used by physiotherapists to determine if someone can return to running, we asked physiotherapists to fill out an online questionnaire. In total, 476 physiotherapists from Australia, France and the Netherlands completed this questionnaire.
The physiotherapists indicated that they mainly use the following criteria: knee swelling, knee pain, and thigh muscle strength. However, answers to the questionnaire varied a lot. Additionally, it was unclear which cut-off values should be best used for these criteria.
