What did Zlatan say about his ACL injury?
May 26, 2022
Today I have a new ACL and another trophy
The 40-year-old Zlatan discussed the extent of his suffering over the last six months in an Instagram post:
“For the past six months I played without an ACL in my left knee. Swollen knee for six months. I was only able to train with the team 10 times in the last six months. Took more than 20 injections in six months. Emptied the knee once a week for six months. Painkillers every day for six months. Barely slept for six months because of the pain. Never suffered so much on and off the pitch. I made something impossible to something possible. In my mind I had only one objective, to make my teammates and coach champions of Italy because I made them a promise.
Today I have a new ACL and another trophy!”
It was the second time for Zlatan to tear his anterior cruciate ligament. Read about the first time here.
About the surgery
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has undergone knee surgery on may 25 (2022) and has been ruled out of action with AC Milan for up to eight months.
“AC Milan announces that Zlatan Ibrahimovic underwent surgery on his left knee today by Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, in the presence of club medical director Stefano Mazzoni, at the Hopital Jean Mermoz in Lyon,” read a statement issued by AC Milan on Wednesday.
“The arthroscopy had been planned for some time to definitively resolve the instability of the joint through reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, with lateral reinforcement and meniscal repair.
“The operation was perfectly successful and the prognosis is estimated at 7-8 months.”
Doctor Bertrand Sonnery Cottet was the man responsible for performing the surgery on Ibrahimovic’s knee.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his comeback for Milan on February 26, 2023, the first appearance since undergoing knee surgery in May 2022. Ibrahimovic’s last game in the Rossoneri jersey was the 3-0 victory away to Sassuolo on May 22, 2022, the day they won the Scudetto. A few days later, after taking some time to relish the celebrations and often lead them for his teammates, he went under the knife to resolve a long-standing knee issue.
Zlatan made history
The 41-year-old replaced Olivier Giroud to a standing ovation from the San Siro crowd during their Serie A match against Atalanta. Just by setting foot on the pitch, the Sweden international entered the history books, becoming the oldest Milan player to feature in Serie A at 41 years and 146 days. The previous record-holder was Alessandro Costacurta at the age of 41 years and 25 days.
